The initial scissor lifts were first designed in the 1970's. Substantial improvements in safety and materials have been made ever since then, but the essential design is still accepted. A relative to the forklift, the scissor lift became well-known for its portability and effectiveness, also becoming popular as they were the only mechanized platforms that could be without difficulty retracted to fit into the corner of a room.
